Open Mobile System 2.0 to run Win Mobile apps?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

China Mobile on Tuesday made the unusual claim that its variant on Android will run Windows Mobile apps. In upgrading Open Mobile System to 2.0, the carrier said it inherited voice recognition and many of the other features of Android 2.0 but also that it will recognize the “Windows Mobile API.” It’s not certain which apps for the Microsoft OS, if any, will work in OMS’ current form.

The company has long broadcast its intentions to make OMS run non-Android software, including Symbian, but in the several months since its release OMS has only run Android apps on devices like the Lenovo Ophone O1. Emulation or transcoding of apps for another phone OS has generally been very rare if not entirely absent on smartphones, as the strain on the processor is often too high. Also, little advance work has been done to allow for non-native code.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Pureness

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Here’s the thing about Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Pureness: once you get past the translucent display, there’s not much to it. Seriously — it doesn’t have 3G, a camera, hunks of precious metal, or even a fancy name to flaunt like Vertu, Dior, or Versace; it’s just a low-end phone from a mass-market manufacturer that can’t do much other than make calls. We suppose that’s why it was so easy for a Shenzhen KIRFer to pop out this near-perfect duplicate of the Pureness — the Somy X5 — in no time. Heck, it’s even got support for two SIMs, or exactly twice as many as you’ll find on the $1,000 genuine article — which, if you’re keeping track, is over twelve times the bargain-basement sticker on the Somy here at RMB 550 ($81).

Nokia Morph

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Nokia has been busy lately filing a new patent for a device with a bendy screen, which could suggest that their Morph mobile phone concept that was released a few years ago maybe closer to reality than we think.

The patent application named “User interface, device and method for a physically flexible device” covers designs that allow the phone to be bent into different shapes.

Coke Fuelled Mobile Phone

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Never be caught out again with this ingenious concept coke mobile phone that runs on Coca-Cola drinks. Yes that right, the bio battery the phone generates electricity from the carbohydrates (the sugar) in the Coke and uses enzymes as the catalyst.

Bio batteries have been around a for decades and can produce 3 or 4 times the amount of energy a traditional lithium mobile phone battery can. Seems strange why this isn’t already a commercial product. Especially as Coke is pretty much available anywhere in the world these days.

Verizon Announces Nokia 2705 Shade Flip Phone

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Think what you will, but we’re big believers in “keeping it real” ’round these parts. While we swoon whenever a new smart phone hits the scene, the vast majority are still stuck in the flip phone zone – and you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that. Have no fear, flip fans, Verizon is here to fulfill all your flipping needs with the new Nokia 2705 Shade.

Being marketed as a “light-weight, compact and colorful” flip phone, the Nokia Shade will initially only be available online and will come in two tasty flavors: “normal” – one with a camera (more below)*, and “secret agent” – a model without a camera, for all of you who can’t carry camera-equipped devices into your info-sensitive work places (we presume).

In regards to the “colorful” aspect of the device (don’t mind the black press shot of the phone above), Nokia is keeping with the old-school theme (think early 2000s) and will be offering interchangeable “Xpress-on” covers in blue, red, and purple for $19.99. Considering the Nokia Shade with camera, itself, will cost just $29.99 (with a new two-year customer agreement), spending almost $20 a pop per color cover (66% of the total price of the handset, for crying out loud) is pretty comical. The new flipper will be available online beginning Oct. 6 at verizonwireless.com.

Nokia N900 Coming to the US on September 27

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Nokia N900 is already on pre-order in the US, but its official release date in the States is still unknown.

However, The Nokia Blog has it that a major US distributor will receive the new Maemo-based device on September 27, and start offering it a few days later.

The N900 will be sold at the pre-order price – $649.

Since the smartphone (or Internet Tablet, if you want to call it that way) has quad-band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900) and tri-band WCDMA (900 / 1700 / 2100) connectivity, it will work on T-Mobile’s network. Of course, it can also be used with AT&T, but without 3G.

Coming as Nokia’s first Maemo-based device to have phone capabilities, the N900 features a 3.5 inch touchscreen display with 800 x 480 pixels, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, GPS, FM transmitter, stereo speakers, 3.5mm headset jack, 5MP Carl Zeiss camera with video recording, and 32GB of internal memory (expandable with a MicroSD card).

Nokia recently said that it supports carrier customization for its Maemo products, so we shouldn’t be surprised if T-Mobile USA will soon offer the N900 on contract.

Nokia XpressMusic 5130 Arrives Sept 16 to T-Mobile

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Is it a surprise that Nokia’s newest XpressMusic phone is coming to T-Mobile? Probably not; it’s no secret that T-Mobile and Nokia’s XpressMusic series have a tight bond.

According to CellPhoneSignal, the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic is coming as early as tomorrow, September 16. It will be available in red and aqua/white at time of launch.

As to be expected with the newest offering in this music-centric series of phones, there won’t be a lot of huge bells and whistles besides the essentials: 3.5 mm headset jack, FM radio with RDS, stereo bluetooth, external music controls, and it has a 2 MP camera thrown in.

It isn’t a very obvious product launch, considering it launches tomorrow and we still don’t know the planned price. The 5130 will be replacing the 5310 so it’s likely to be priced around the same level.

Beaterator iPhone app coming

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , ,

Rockstar Games, the team behind the Grand Theft Auto series, has announced that it’s releasing an iPhone application called Beaterator this Autumn. It’s a port of a PSP game due later in the month that allows players to create “world-class” beats and songs.

The app features “thousands” of different loops and sounds, according to the company, and should be accessible to anyone - from musical professionals to the greenest amateur.

Sam Houser, Rockstar’s Founder, told Pocket-lint: “The simple, pick-up-and-play nature of Beaterator lends itself so well to the Apple platforms. We are happy to deliver an application that allows for such unprecedented sharing and ease-of-use”.

The app doesn’t yet have a release date or a price, but the PSP version will be showing up in Europe on 2 October. It shouldn’t be too long after that until it turns up on Apple’s platform too.
