The touchscreen wallpaper of the future

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I think that we all know that the future is full of Microsoft Surface technology, and I look forward to the day when every table or desk is a touchscreen.

This touchscreen is very useful for all.

DISPLAX, made by a Portuguese company, is prepared for an age where every tabletop, wall, or any large flat (or even curved) surface could be a touchscreen. DISPLAX is a thinner-than-paper polymer film that can be applied to glass, plastic, or wood and can detect up to 16 touches at once.

I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to think of some good uses already. In fact, my dream house will have DISPLAX as wall-paper in every room. Read the rest of this entry »

Samson announces 2 new portable speaker systems

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

The gap between consumer audio and professional audio can be rather daunting. Large speakers require large amplifiers and large mixing desks and all sorts of convoluted patching bays. Another inescapable side effect of these professional systems is that they also require large, sweaty men to haul everything around, and some know-it-all engineer to make it all work. Not quite what you want at your backyard barbecue. Samson Audio’s Expedition series are all-in-one, inclusive sound systems aimed at bridging that gap, and this year brings in two new contestants.

The specs for the XP40iw and XP510i are in the very nice chart below. But the large changes are that the XP40iw contains an integrated wireless microphone system, and the XP510i actually breaks apart into dual 2-way speaker cabinets and a 10-channel mixer. All three units have iPod docks built right in.

Now from the schematics below, I’ve determined that the naming scheme for these, while a bit unimaginative, is the number of watts the system can handle + the size of the woofer. So the XP510i can pump out 500 watts out of a 10-in speaker. But the case doesn’t hold true for the XP40iw.

NEC announces four DLP projectors

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

NEC in Japan has announced [JP] a total of four new DLP data projectors today. The NP53J/NP54J/NP63J and NP64J are part of NEC’s so-called ViewLight projector series. All of the new models offer XGA resolution (1,024×768), a contrast ratio of 1,600:1 and rather weak 0.3W mono speakers.

The NP53J and NP54J have 200W lamps that produce 2,600 lumens, while the NP63J and NP64J feature 220W lamps with 3,000 lumens brightness. Only buyers of the NP54J and NP64J get a USB port that makes it possible to use the devices without a PC (a Bluetooth adapter that’s compatible to all four models costs an extra $150).

NEC plans to start selling the ViewLight projectors in Japan on February 10. Prices: $1,050 for the NP53J, $1,150 for the NP54J, $1,300 for the NP63J and $1,450 for the NP64J. NEC hasn’t said anything yet about offering these devices outside Japan.

Scosche solBAT II solar powered charger

A solar charger with a 1500mAh capacity battery and 5-volt output from a relatively well known manufacturer priced at $30. That actually seems reasonable. The solBAT II from Scosche features a standard USB output port for charging most of your portable devices and it even comes with a little suction mount case for use in the car. So what’s the catch for $30? Well according to the user manual, it’ll take 4-5 days to charge up the internal battery using the solar panel. Thankfully, the kit also includes a USB charge cable that’ll juice up the battery in around five hours. That kind of defeats the purpose of a solar charger, though. Whatever the case, you’ll probably want to leave this thing stuck to your windshield or anywhere it’ll get a lot of direct sunlight. And the 1500mAh battery is good for an entire charge and then some for most standard phone batteries. So in an emergency, you’d be good to go if your phone dies. source: crunchgear.com

USB hard drive enclosure via DVD connector

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

This will prove extremely handy if you have a netbook without an optical drive. We’ve used Unetbootin to move Linux ISO images to a thumb drive in the past. In addition to getting around the lack of an optical drive, this saves burning the data to a piece of plastic. But, you should be able to use this with a Leopard retail DVD instead of a 16GB thumb drive for a Hackintosh conversion. That means you could install Leopard on a netbook without needing a Mac to transfer the disk image to your thumb drive first.

More and more lightweight laptops and netbooks are shipping sans optical drives. Don’t buy an external drive for for $50+ for those few times you need it, turn an old USB HDD enclosure and DVD drive into an external drive.

It seems like not having a CD/DVD drive would put you at a disadvantage but optical media just isn’t that frequently used anymore in the age of high speed downloads—I’ve never needed an optical drive on my netbook and I’ve only used the optical drive on my desktop a few times in the last year. Still in those rare instances where you really need an optical drive it’s frustrating to be without one. Don’t run out and buy a $50+ external drive you’re only going to use once in a blue moon if you’ve got—as most geeks do—a pile of old parts. Read the rest of this entry »

Microsoft Announces 250 GB Hard Drive for Xbox 360 Price.

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Microsoft, the creator of the Xbox 360 home gaming console, has announced that it plans to release an external 250 GB hard drive for its platform on the Japanese market. The new storage device is set to arrive on March 11 alongside other accessories and will cost interested players 15,540 Yen, which is about 172 dollars.

It seems that the fresh hard drive peripheral is the same the company offered when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released as part of the bundle that involved the Xbox 360.

After gamers inquired about the availability of the new storage solution, Microsoft strongly denied having plans to release it as a standalone product. The software giant has clearly changed its mind since the days of fall 2009.

At the moment, those who pick up the Elite version of the Xbox 360 get a 120 GB hard drive and players who have the Arcade version of the console or an older Pro version, which is no longer manufactured and sold, can also get it as a standalone accessory. If the company plans to put out the 250 GB drive in North America and in Europe as well, it will effectively offer double the potential storage capacity of those who own an Xbox 360.

The 250GB Xbox 360 hard drive is priced at ¥15,540 and can be used to store all your games, high definition videos, trailers etc. The Xbox 360 250GB Hard Drive is the largest storage option for Xbox 360 which can be used to save your game progress, Xbox LIVE gamer profile, game demos, and custom soundtracks from your own music collection. You can also download movies and television shows from Xbox LIVE Marketplace and play original and retro games in Xbox LIVE Arcade.

Xbox 360 Wireless Controller Game Pack is priced at ¥5,775. The package contains four hit Xbox LIVE Arcade games: Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2, Lumines LIVE!, and Bomberman LIVE are included on disc, plus a downloadable token for Ms. Pac-Man.

Intel Atom chips enroute with support for DDR3 RAM

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

An unconfirmed rumor maintains Intel will soon release two new updated Pine Trail Intel Atom chips, the Atom N475 and N455. The former has a 1.83GHz clock speed while the latter retains the common 1.6GHz rating, and both get DDR3 RAM support, which is a first for the Atom range.

Otherwise, the chips keep the TDP ratings of those they are based on, with the N455’s 5.5W TDP and the N475’s 6.5W. A range of netbooks with the new chips is expected near the end of the year, as the chips are scheduled to begin shipping in the fall.

Open Mobile System 2.0 to run Win Mobile apps?

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

China Mobile on Tuesday made the unusual claim that its variant on Android will run Windows Mobile apps. In upgrading Open Mobile System to 2.0, the carrier said it inherited voice recognition and many of the other features of Android 2.0 but also that it will recognize the “Windows Mobile API.” It’s not certain which apps for the Microsoft OS, if any, will work in OMS’ current form.

The company has long broadcast its intentions to make OMS run non-Android software, including Symbian, but in the several months since its release OMS has only run Android apps on devices like the Lenovo Ophone O1. Emulation or transcoding of apps for another phone OS has generally been very rare if not entirely absent on smartphones, as the strain on the processor is often too high. Also, little advance work has been done to allow for non-native code.

Microsoft SideWinder X4 Gaming keyboard

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Microsoft Hardware launches the SideWinder X4 Keyboard, a keyboard designed to give gamers more control over their gaming experience with the industry’s most advanced anti-ghosting technology. Developed by the Applied Sciences Group, this new technology ensures gamers’ most complex key combinations will be recognized by the computer to keep the game in action. The new keyboard also offers other advanced gaming features such as macro recording, mode and profile switching, and adjustable backlighting.

It allows you to press up to 26 keys simultaneously, and since each key is scanned independently by the keyboard hardware, the SideWinder X4 will register each key press correctly, independent of all the other keys being pressed at once. In other words, the SideWinder 4 Keyboard by far excels where other keyboards fail, allowing gamers to execute key combinations that will be able to keep up with your skill and speed.

The Applied Sciences Group, an interdisciplinary research and development team that works across the Microsoft Entertainment & Devices Division doing applied research for Microsoft Hardware, Microsoft Surface and Xbox 360, developed the anti-ghosting technology with gamers in mind. The advanced technology takes anti-ghosting to the next level by allowing gamers to press up to 26 keys at once. Because each key is scanned independently by the keyboard hardware, each key press is correctly detected regardless of how many other keys are being pressed at the same time. The SideWinder X4 Keyboard excels where other keyboards fail, letting users execute key combinations and taking full advantage of their skill and speed.

The SideWinder X4 Keyboard will be available in March 2010 for the estimated retail price of $59.95.

Drum Kit Keychain Gadget Price

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

The advent of the drum solo changed rock music forever. Previously drums had been pretty mad… with all the attention that vocals and guitars were getting. However finally they could take center stage while playing alone for 30 or more boring seconds in a row. Bands like Van Halen tried to add interest to this long sequence of drums by adding the rotating drum cage to their concerts… unfortunately this made the drums motion sick and caused numerous percussion based lawsuits.

Now you can keep your own mini drums in your pocket, ready to whip out and beat into a frenzy at a moments notice. Sadly a rotating drum cage is not included.

Product Features

* Electronic keychain plays the drums when you tap it
* Six different playable drums each with its own sound
* Oh… also holds your keys
* Batteries included

It would be nice if the device came with some sort of recording facility in order to record down all your thumb-tapping solos in their full glory to be shared with others. Apart from that, it makes for an interesting keychain, and nice to know that you get batteries included with each $7.99

Microsoft committed itself further to gaming keyboards Monday morning through the SideWinder X4. The USB peripheral revolves around a freshly developed anti-ghosting technology that can recognize many key presses without losing input. A user can press as many as 26 keys at once and so can keep control even in the middle of a first-person shooter.

The full-length USB keyboard also has programmable macro keys, the option to automatically repeat macros and a profile feature to reconfigure the keyboard for different games. Backlighting is equally adjustable and can be set to match a given game.

Microsoft doesn’t ship the X4 until March but will start taking pre-orders at Amazon before the end of the week at $60
